What is the Greater Sydney Nepalese Multicultural Centre (GSNMC Inc.)?
The Greater Sydney Nepalese Multicultural Centre (GSNMC Inc.) is a community-driven initiative created to address the need for a dedicated space where the growing Nepali community in Sydney can come together. Initially initiated from the South West Nepalese Community, the Sydney Nepalese Multicultural Centre (SNMC) was formed to facilitate the community centre concept. Later, wider community consultation facilitated by NRNA Australia led to the decision to merge SNMC and create GSNMC Inc. This Centre will serve as a vibrant hub for cultural activities, social services, educational programs, and community support. It aims to celebrate our rich heritage, foster a sense of belonging and unity, and provide a venue for sharing experiences and supporting one another. With the support of our community, generous donors, and government grants, GSNMC Inc. will play a crucial role in enriching the lives of the Nepalese diaspora in Sydney and surrounding areas.
Why are we building a Multicultural Centre?
The Greater Sydney Nepalese Multicultural Centre (GSNMC Inc.) is a community-driven initiative aimed at addressing the need for a dedicated space for Sydney’s rapidly growing Nepali population, now over 100,000. This Centre will provide a central location where individuals and families can access culturally relevant services, engage in community activities, and preserve their heritage. As a hub for cultural events, educational programs, social services, and community support, the GSNMC will be more than just a building; it will be a vital space for Nepalis to come together, celebrate their rich culture, host social events, and foster a sense of unity and belonging.
What kind of project is this in terms of religion, ethnicity, or belief?
This project is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to all Nepali individuals, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or belief. It is not tied to any single religion or ethnic group but aims to serve the entire Nepali community. The Centre is planned to feature spaces for various religious practices and will be developed with a “mini-Nepal” concept, ensuring that everyone can call it home, organize events, enjoy cultural activities, and benefit from the services provided.
What is the implementation plan for the Multicultural Centre?
We have categorised implementation plan into below three phases.
Phase 1: Plan and fundraise by forming a executive committee, conducting a feasibility study, and launching a campaign.
Phase 2: Acquire a location, design, and construct the facility.
Phase 3: Hire staff, launch programs, and establish partnerships while adapting to community needs.
When the project is anticipated to be completed?
With the administrative phase now complete, we are moving into the next stage, which involves a membership drive lasting approximately one year. Our immediate goal is to secure land within the next 1-2 years. Following this, we will focus on fundraising and acquiring necessary approvals. While the timeline for construction and completion will depend on land acquisition, approvals, and funding, we are committed to progressing as swiftly and effectively as possible to bring the community centre to fruition.
Where will the multicultural centre be located?
Given factors like land availability, cost, and the concentration of the Nepali population, the most feasible location for the Multicultural Centre is along the western belt of Sydney. We aim to secure land in this area at the lowest possible cost, ideally through government grants. Our primary goal is to find the most cost-effective option in the western belt, and we’ll build the community centre wherever we can acquire suitable land.
What is the estimated cost of the Multicultural Centre, and what are the sources of funding?
The estimated cost for the Multicultural Centre is between $3 and $5 million for land acquisition. The overall cost for construction will be determined in the future, depending on land purchase and approvals. Funding will come from membership fees, generous donations, and government grants. We are committed to keeping our members informed and involved as we move into the construction phase and secure additional funding
How will the Multicultural Centre be funded?
Sydney has a vibrant Nepali population of over 100,000, with more than 10,000 Nepali households already settled here, according to census data. With strong support from our community, numerous generous donors, and government grants, we are confident in our ability to fund this project. Your support, along with these combined efforts, will be crucial in bringing the Multicultural Centre to life for our community.
How does GSNMC manage its funds and finances securely?
At GSNMC, we prioritize financial transparency and security to ensure that our funds are used efficiently to achieve our mission. We manage our finances through accurate record-keeping, a majority approval system for internal controls, careful budgeting, and regular audits with comprehensive financial reporting.
What types of memberships does GSNMC Inc. offer?
We offer three types of memberships:
- Individual Life Membership: $1,000 per person, with voting rights, lifetime 10% event discount, and optional name display on the GSNMC building.
- Family Life Membership: $1,500 per family, covering two members with the same benefits as Individual Life Membership.
- Organizational Membership: $5,000 for Not-for-Profit and $10,000 for Business organizations, both with instalment payment options.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
As a member, you will be a proud contributor to a vital community initiative—the creation and growth of a community centre that belongs to all of us, including you. In addition to being part of something meaningful, you’ll enjoy lifetime voting rights, a 10% discount on all GSNMC events and Hall hire, and the opportunity to actively participate in preserving and promoting Nepali culture.
How do I apply for membership?
You can apply by filling out the membership form on our Membership Page and making the initial payment.
Can I pay my membership fee in instalments?
Yes, both Individual and Family Life Memberships offer instalment plans. Organizations also have instalment options, depending on their membership type.
Can I upgrade from Individual Life Membership to Family Life Membership?
Sure, you can upgrade by paying the fee difference between the Individual and Family Life Memberships.
How can I get involved with GSNMC Inc.?
We appreciate your interest on working with us. You can get involved by becoming a member, executive member, volunteering at events, joining subcommittees, or applying to be an ambassador. Donations are also welcome to support our initiatives.
What is the sustainability plan for the Multicultural Centre?
Our sustainability plan for the Multicultural Centre includes several key strategies:
- Revenue Generation: We will generate income through ongoing membership fees, event rentals, and cultural programs.

If I don’t want to take the membership, can I still support the project?
Absolutely! Even if you choose not to become a member, you can still support the project by making a donation. Every contribution helps us move closer to our goal of creating a vibrant community centre for everyone.
How is my payment information protected when I make a donation or purchase on the GSNMC website?
Your payment information is protected through advanced security measures. All card details are encrypted and securely processed by our payment provider, Stripe. GSNMC cannot access or store your card information. This ensures that your payment data is handled with the highest level of security and privacy.
Who will look after the operations of the GSNMC?
The operations of the GSNMC will be managed by a dedicated committee elected by the members of the GSNMC at the AGM. This committee will handle everything from daily operations to maintenance and program development, ensuring the centre runs smoothly and serves its intended purpose.
How will the GSNMC support new immigrants from Nepal?
The centre will offer a range of services to help new immigrants adjust to life in Australia, including orientation programs, language classes, and access to legal advice, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported as they integrate into the community.
How can second-generation Nepalese Australians get involved in GSNMC, and what role will youth have?
Second-generation Nepalese Australians, like all members, have the opportunity to join the executive body, including the Board of Directors (BOD), and potentially lead the team. Youth are at the core of the GSNMC, with ample opportunities to take on leadership roles, participate in cultural programs, and organize events that reflect their interests and passions, playing a key role in shaping the future of the community.
How will the centre address the needs of senior citizens in the community?

What measures will be taken to ensure the safety and security of the GSNMC?
